I am starting my garden at the Earthxy camp in central Florida. After doing some research and planning, I've decided that a perennial and self seeding herb garden is where I'll start. The plants that I am starting with are also pest deterrents that I will have ready when I plant a vegetable garden. Peppercorn is a vine that is shade tolerant and grows to 33 ft. it takes 2 years to mature, Citronella grows up to 5' Catnip 3-4', Bee balm 2-3' high shade tolerant, Lavender gets 2' tall, Rosemary 2' tall, Peppermint grows 18-24", Thyme 6-8", Oregano 2 1/2". I still want to do more research and make a garden plan.
PeppercornGoogle search (peppercorn uses) brings up mostly culinary and medicinal uses. Something else that I have come across is peppercorn as an insect repellent and peppercorn apparently repels most animals as well. Peppercorn will be a great asset to my garden.
Searching citronella uses I find that it has anti fungal properties to help heal insect bites. Insect repellent and many other medicinal uses. I'm sold. moving on.
Leaves and flowers used as tea, also medicinal uses and insect repellent.
Bee balmEdible, salads, teas, medicinal, good for pollinators
Teas, skin care, anti-fungal, repels insects, many culinary uses.
Cooking, reliving pain, medical uses may have adverse effects in high doses (always do your own research.
Medicinal, insect repellent
cooking, teas, medicinal, cabbage companion, repels pests, attracts pollinators.
The first searches I did when I planned on starting a garden was for perennial insect repelling plants. I will be adding to this post later. Thanks for reading the Earthxy Blog Starting a garden post.
